While most people were enjoying a quiet evening shopping at a Target last week, one Southern California woman was fighting to stay alive.
She was at the checkout counter when Rejean Morgan Tabor, 34, walked into the store and ambushed her from behind, choking her and covering her mouth and nose, police said.
Witnesses said she was near death when customers and employees rushed in to help.
Tabor turned his rage at the good Samaritans, as the clash spilled into a clothing aisle.
Video showed multiple people scuffling with him — two brave women were knocked to the ground, one man shoved Tabor, while another man threw punches as a young girl stood only feet away.
Eventually, employees evacuated the store and police arrested Tabor in the grocery section.
The only solace?
The choking victim was hospitalized and is in stable condition, while Tabor now faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder.
Here’s our top 3 takeaways:
1. Safety is an illusion
Anyone who shops at a Target doesn’t expect to be an actual target. But remember: violence doesn’t send calendar invites. Stay alert.
2. Have a (family) plan
That little girl stood frozen just a few feet from the attacker. She could have easily gotten hurt in the melee. Every family member should know what to do if s#!t hits the fan — e.g. you deal with the threat and your partner evacuates the kids while your teen calls 911.
3. Courage deserves competence
If any of the bystanders had substantial training, they could have stopped Tabor within moments. However, he rampaged through the store and several customers suffered minor injuries, police said.
That’s not to take away from the good Samaritans, who no doubt saved the first victim’s life. Bravery matters. But courage without skill can quickly become chaos.
That’s one reason we created the Toolset Training Tour.
On July 18-19, it’ll make its way to San Francisco, where you’ll spend two days learning practical skills with the pen, flashlight, and pocketknife — along with the drills, tactics, and mindset that help ordinary people navigate extraordinary situations like the Target attack.
If this made you think, “I want to be ready for that,” then preparation is the next step.
