Imagine it’s the middle of the night. You’re deep in REM sleep when a strange noise wakes you up. An intruder is in your house.
Your heart races. Your breathing quickens. Your muscles tighten.
What do you do next?
This nightmare scenario is something we’ve all thought about. But for UFC fighter Anthony Smith, it was something he actually experienced recently.
With his wife and kids to protect, the light heavyweight contender jumped from his bed and bolted down the stairs. And who does this 6-foot-4, 205-pound professional MMA fighter face when he finds the intruder?
A 21-year-old man who’s barely 170 pounds.
So Smith probably mopped the floor with this guy, right? Knocked him out in a flash with a devastating knee to the head? Or maybe shot in with a double-leg take-down and secured a rear naked choke to subdue the burglar in a few seconds?
Nope. Not even close.
A black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who’s been fighting professionally since 2008, Smith said it was “one of the toughest fights” of his life. The violent encounter lasted for a whopping 5 minutes until police finally arrived.
As the saying goes, “When seconds count, police are minutes away.”

But needless to say, his MMA training definitely made a difference … but it didn’t provide all the answers. If you haven’t already, it’s worth taking some time to watch the entire video. Then proceed reading below.
Here are our major Tiga Tactics Takeaways from Smith’s experience:
Practice: Just like a fire drill, have a SHTF plan for a home invasion scenario and rehearse it with everyone who lives in your household.
Lock Up: Smith’s encounter reaffirms what our friends in law enforcement and our own criminal research already revealed: The most common entry points for criminals are the front door and the garage. So lock your doors (and windows) and double-check them before you go to bed.
If You Got It, Use It: Smith said he had a security system … but didn’t arm it before he went to bed. This is obvious — if you have an alarm system, use it.
Make Ready: Self-defense tools are useless if they’re not within arm’s reach. When poop hits the fan, you just won’t have time to go searching for your weapon.
Keep Training: While you might be a skilled warrior in your own right, there’s a good chance you’re not a UFC fighter vying for the light heavyweight championship of the world. But Smith is — and his fight took 5 long minutes. Do you have the wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, and striking skills (and the physical stamina) to fend off someone who’s possibly under the influence of a controlled substance or mentally unstable?
We’re not saying you need to be a UFC contender to prevail in a violent encounter. You don’t have to be a physical specimen and MMA expert like Smith to win. But what we are saying is that you want to stack the odds in your favor. You want as many advantages as possible when your life is (or your loved ones’ lives are) on the line.
So train hard and train often.

Like much of the world, we’ve been closely monitoring the developments surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19). Instead we preach preparation (re: prepping, practicing self-defense, maintaining situational awareness) and smart lifestyle choices (e.g. eating right, training regularly, and proper hygiene).
After all, prevention is the best medicine.
The safety and well-being of our students and their families is our top priority as teachers. So, we are moving the seminar to a later date and heeding recommendations by federal, state, and local officials to avoid gatherings of 10 or more people.
We also can’t predict the future, and we don’t know if authorities will implement further restrictions that can limit your travel to our training site. So, rather than hope all goes well with the logistics, we are re-planning to ensure a successful event in the future. (After all, hope is not a strategy.)

Agreement to Rules: By participating, the Participant (hereinafter called “You”) agree to be fully unconditionally bound by these terms and conditions, and You represent and warrant that You meet the eligibility requirements. In addition, You agree to accept the decisions of the Company as final and binding as it relates to the content of This Giveaway.
3. Giveaway Period: Entries will be accepted on Instagram starting on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at 7 a.m. PDT and ending Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at 11:59 p.m. PDT. All online entries must be received no later than Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at 11:59 p.m. PDT.
4. How to Enter: The Giveaway can only be entered by taking the following steps: 1) following @tigatactics on Instagram, 2) like the giveaway image posted on the @tigatactics account on April 18, 2019, 3) and tag one friend in a comment below the giveaway image posted on the @tigatactics account on April 18, 2019, and 4) Winner must take a photo of themselves with the prizes, post it to their Instagram account, and tag @tigatactics.
The entry must fulfill all Giveaway requirements, as specified, to be eligible to win a prize. Entries that are incomplete or do not adhere to the rules or specifications may be disqualified at the sole discretion of the Company.
5. Prizes: The Winner of the Giveaway (hereinafter called the “Winner”) will receive a Cold Steel Finn Wolf folding knife (approximate retail value of $64.99) and three Tiga Tactics stickers (retail value not applicable). Actual/appraised value may differ at time of prize award. The specifics of the prize shall be solely determined by the Company. No cash or other prize substitution shall be permitted except at the Company’s discretion. The prize is nontransferable.
Any and all
prize-related expenses, including without limitation any and all federal, state/provincial,
and/or local taxes, shall be the sole responsibility of Winner. No substitution
of prize or transfer/assignment of prize to others or request for the cash equivalent
by Winner is permitted. Acceptance of prize constitutes permission for the
Company to use Winner’s name, likeness, and entry for purposes of advertising
and trade without further compensation, unless prohibited by law.
6. Odds: The odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received.
7. Winner Selection and Notification: Winner will be selected by a random drawing under the supervision of the Company. Winner will be notified via Instagram within two (2) days following selection of Winner. Winner must provide the Company with their name, mailing
address, and Instagram account handle in order for the Company to mail the
prizes.
The Company shall have no liability for Winner’s failure to receive notices due to spam, junk e-mail, or other security settings or for Winner’s provision of incorrect or otherwise non-functioning contact information. If Winner cannot be contacted, is ineligible, or fails to claim the prize within 72 hours (3 days) from the time award notification was sent, the prize may be forfeited and an alternate Winner selected.
Receipt by Winner of
the prize offered in This Giveaway is conditioned upon compliance with any and
all federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The Company is not liable
or responsible in any way for any taxes, tariffs, or fees associated with receipt
of the prize.
